Chapter 10

His hands were fully trembling by the time they pulled up to Rafael’s house. As the other man fumbled with payment, Shai scrambled from the car and said nothing, didn’t make eye contact, as they reached the door. Rafael had his keys out, keeping close to Shai without touching. The lock clicked like a bang, and the door swung open.

Whatever was going to happen, they stood on the precipice of the decision. Outside they could wallow in the tension, but the moment they crossed that threshold, they wouldn’t be able to ignore it anymore. Shai never considered himself a cowardly man, but right now he’d never felt more like running.

Then a hand pressed to the small of his back, and he took the step. The door shut, and Rafael clicked the light on. Shai took a breath to speak, maybe to make an excuse as to why he needed to go straight to bed, but he didn’t get the chance.

Rafael had him by the shoulders, backing him up against the door, one warm palm on his cheek. “Shai,” he breathed out.

Shai’s eyes fluttered shut. It had been so long—far too long—since anyone had touched him like this. Since anyone had said his name with want and desire behind it. It was eclipsing any desire to leave, to put a stop to it before he could get in over his head. His hands moved reflexively to Rafael’s hips, and he swallowed.

“I don’t know what I want,” he blurted.

Rafael nodded as soon as Shai dared to open his eyes. “I can see that.”

Shai looked away, then back again. “I want you,” he confessed. “Bloody hell, I want you, so badly. I want,” he stopped and licked his lips. He took a slow breath, and hated that it came out trembling. “It’s complicated. I live so far.”

“I know,” Rafael said.

“And I want more than…” He stopped himself again. “Fuck. I feel childish.”

Rafael dragged his thumb over Shai’s cheek, his eyes soft and kind. “You’re not childish. Are you still drunk?”

Shai shook his head against Rafael’s palm. “No. No, I’m sober, which is why this is so awful.”

Rafael let out a humorous laugh. “Yeah. Yeah, I…I get that. Doesn’t change anything. You’re sweet, and attractive. I think I’ve had a crush on you since you got here and shit…” He bit his lip and stepped in even closer, enough that his thigh slotted between Shai’s. “I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you.”

Shai closed his eyes again, pressing the back of his head hard against the door, hoping the pain would bring him back to earth. “We can do this,” he said. “I want to do this. And we can…we can talk in the morning, about what it means.”

When he dared to look again, Rafael was watching him with a contemplative look. Then, he nodded, and leaned in.

There was a moment, just a second of panic, when Shai’s face hung there in the air. But just before he was about to pull back and make his excuses, Rafael’s lips met his.
